I’m about to start my freshman year at Addis Ababa University(Ethiopia), looking to pursue computer science. I’m not sure now, but I may want to do a master’s or PhD in the US or UK in the future, after I graduate or a couple of years after.
How do top schools for computer science (e.g., Stanford, Berkeley, Columbia, CMU, Cambridge, Oxford) look at someone from an African university?
Would a 3.9-4.0 GPA and being the top of your class be good for these schools, or would they not even consider it because it’s from Ethiopia? I tried to check through WES, but you have to pay to get your degree and transcript evaluated, and I’m only a freshman right now.
I know they look at other stuff like publications, research experience, statement of purpose, etc., but assuming I have that by the time I apply and I have a competitive profile —minus coming from a top school —would they even consider me since I come from an African university?
Does having a LOR from an unknown African professor and not having a recommender with any good international connections disadvantage me?
Has anyone been accepted to these schools with a degree from an African university? Or do you know anyone who has been?
P.S. I couldn’t find any related flair, “Geopolitics & International Relations” is the closest one I could find. So I apologize if it’s not the correct one.
